Hong Kong Panoramas
Arguably the best known and most widely collected of Chau’s works are the panoramic views of Hong Kong’s landscapes he created in watercolour and pen. Primarily documentary in character, Chau’s depictions incorporate a colour palette so rich and fantastical that his ambition to display the beauty of the city’s natural and built environment could not be represented in a better light. Often seen from high vantage points on the Peak or from Lion Rock, or sometimes drawn as imaginary bird’s-eye views, his paintings are extraordinary testaments to the magnificence Chau saw in Hong Kong. Whether created on a day-long hike or commissioned by a patron, his wide-angle visions are like Venetian vedute documenting—for the local resident and visitor alike—the magnificence of the pristine harbour city.
Altogether, Chau’s significant contribution to the local art scene must be seen in his numerous view-paintings that memorialise Hong Kong in what we consider today as exemplary Hong Kong paintings, as well as crucial
historical documents recording a city undergoing continuous waves of urban development. The artist developed a personal style that differs from the traditional Lingnan-school paintings and techniques of other émigré artists from Guangdong. Chau excelled in selling to an appreciative local and foreign clientele while also preserving his early works, the more rudimentary as well as fully developed drawings and many of the panoramic watercolour paintings upon which he built his reputation.
