Traces of the Brush
During the 1960s and mid-1970s, Fong Chung-ray began focusing on traditional Chinese elements in his artwork, using ink and paper as his primary mediums. He explored different painting techniques, deviating from traditional mounting convention and experimenting with circular or rhombic canvases. Fong’s works were influenced by Chinese calligraphy and ink wash paintings, incorporating calligraphic strokes and center-tip brushwork which were the core concept of traditional Chinese art. While retaining elements of traditional brushwork, he also introduced more spontaneous and fluid lines, moving towards an abstract style. His compositions showcased vibrant colors and contrasting lines, creating dynamic visual effects and enhancing the rhythmic qualities of the paintings.
